Valencia in October is excellent and frequently overlooked in favour of Barcelona or Madrid. The city has world-class food (paella was invented here and the locals have opinions about what you should be eating), a dramatic modernist architecture scene, beautiful beaches that are still usable in early October, and prices that are noticeably lower than Spain's two biggest cities. October is a particularly good time to visit.
Weather
Warm and pleasant. Early October sits around 22-25°C, which is comfortable for everything: beach visits, the City of Arts and Sciences, and exploring the historic centre. Late October cools to 17-20°C with some rain. Valencia is Mediterranean coastal city and its autumn weather is genuinely good. Pack light clothing with a layer for evenings, and a light waterproof for the later part of the month.
Crowds and Prices
Quieter than summer. Valencia doesn't attract the same extreme tourist volumes as Barcelona, and October steps back from the summer domestic and European visitor peak. The City of Arts and Sciences is more manageable, the Central Market has space, and the beaches have returned to local use after the summer chaos. Hotel prices are competitive.
What's On
October is the beginning of orange grove season in the region around Valencia, and while the famous Valencian oranges aren't fully in season until November and December, October is the start of the harvest calendar. The Valencia Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) traditionally holds its season finale in Valencia in November, with October bringing some associated activity and fan arrivals. Valencia's cultural events calendar stays active through autumn with theatre, music, and film.
One Thing to Watch
The paella situation in Valencia requires some guidance. Authentic Valencian paella contains chicken, rabbit, and sometimes snails. It does not contain seafood, at least not in its traditional form. Tourist restaurants along the beach serve seafood paella to unsuspecting visitors who don't know otherwise. In October when the tourist layer is thinner, it's easier to find the places locals actually eat. Ask hotel staff or locals for a recommendation rather than picking anything near the City of Arts and Sciences.
