Valencia in February is a city warming up rather than in full gear, and that is its appeal. The City of Arts and Sciences, the Mercado Central, and the old town are all accessible without the crowds of spring or summer, prices are low, and the weather is genuinely mild. In the last weeks of February, the city begins preparing for Las Fallas, the extraordinary fire festival in March, and workshops across the city display the giant papier-mache sculptures (fallas) being built for burning. February is the best time to see the artistry of Las Fallas up close before it becomes one of Europe's most crowded festivals.
Weather
February averages 8C to 16C. Rain falls in short bursts, more so than in summer. Sunshine is regular and afternoons are warm enough to sit outside a cafe without significant discomfort. A light jacket is sufficient for most conditions. This is Valencia operating at a different tempo from its warm months but not as a cold-weather destination.
Crowds and Prices
Low season. The City of Arts and Sciences, which at peak season has significant crowds, is quieter. The Mercado Central and the old town around the Cathedral are accessible. Flights from UK cities are cheap. Hotel prices in the old town and Ruzafa are at their February low before the Las Fallas surge in early March, which dramatically increases accommodation prices.
What's On
Las Fallas preparation is the February highlight. Workshops (fallas workshops, or carpas de falla) across the city display the monumental sculptures that will be erected in the squares for the March 15-19 festival. Visiting these workshops is free, fascinating, and a specifically February experience: after March 19, the sculptures are burned. The city also runs pre-Fallas events and exhibitions through February.
One Thing to Watch
If you are planning to extend your visit into March for Las Fallas itself, book accommodation immediately. Las Fallas dates (March 15-19) are one of the most heavily booked periods in Spain: hotels fill months in advance and prices are extremely high. February is your buffer: the preparation is visible and interesting, and the accommodation market is completely normal.
