April in Valencia is very good. The city has recovered from the intense Las Fallas festival (March), the weather is warm and sunny, and Valencia sits at its relaxed, unhurried best. It is not Barcelona or Madrid in terms of tourist infrastructure, which means it feels proportional and genuinely enjoyable. The paella here is the best in the world, and April is an excellent time to eat it in the city where it was invented.

Weather

April in Valencia sees daytime temperatures of 18C to 22C, with mild evenings around 11C. Sunshine is reliable. The Mediterranean coast is warm but too cold for comfortable swimming for most visitors. A light jacket for evenings is the main packing consideration. This is some of the best weather in Europe in April.

Crowds and Prices

Valencia is less visited than Barcelona and Madrid, which makes it one of the best value major Spanish cities. April is shoulder season, busy at weekends but manageable. The City of Arts and Sciences (Calatrava's architectural complex) is the main crowd magnet. The old town, the Central Market, and the Barrio del Carmen are accessible without pressure. Hotel prices are reasonable.

What's On

Las Fallas is over (it ends on 19 March), so April in Valencia is a post-fiesta month. The city returns to normal pace quickly. The Mercado Central (one of Europe's best covered markets) is operating fully. Valencia's paella culture is available year-round but April is a good time for a paella experience: many restaurants in the village of El Palmar (in the rice-growing Albufera area) offer the real thing.

One Thing to Watch

Paella tourism in Valencia has a quality spectrum. The tourist-facing restaurants around the old town serve mediocre versions at high prices. For the real experience, head to the Albufera Natural Park and El Palmar village, or ask a local for a recommendation in the Ruzafa neighbourhood. A Sunday paella lunch is a Valencian tradition and worth timing your visit around.

Our Valencia guide covers the Calatrava complex, the Central Market, and how to eat properly in Spain's paella capital.
