Warsaw's public transport network is extensive, modern, and cheap by Western European standards. It covers most of the city well and runs 24 hours on weekends. The challenge for first-time visitors is usually navigation rather than coverage — the Jakdojade app solves that completely.

The Network

Metro: two lines. M1 runs north-south, from Kabaty in the south through the city centre to Młociny in the north. M2 runs east-west, from Bemowo through Rondo Daszyńskiego, the city centre (Świętokrzyska interchange with M1), and across the Vistula to Praga. The metro is the fastest option for cross-city journeys and runs every 3–5 minutes at peak times.

Trams: extensive network covering areas the metro doesn't reach, particularly the inner districts and routes along major avenues. Slower than the metro but useful for shorter hops. Real-time timetables at most stops.

Buses: cover the entire city including suburbs. Night buses (N-prefix) run when the metro and trams stop, using the same ticket. The bus network is complex to navigate without the app.

Tickets and Prices

Single ticket: 4.40 PLN (20-minute validity on buses and trams, unlimited metro journeys for the duration). 90-minute ticket: 7 PLN (covers any combination of modes within 90 minutes — the best value for most journeys). 24-hour ticket: 15 PLN. 72-hour ticket: 36 PLN. Weekend ticket (Fri 7 PM to Mon midnight): 24 PLN — excellent value if you're visiting over a weekend.

Buy tickets from: vending machines at metro stations, tram stops, newsagents (kiosk), or via the app (Jakdojade sells tickets in-app with no surcharge). Cash and card accepted at machines.

Validation: Non-Negotiable

Every ticket must be validated before travel. On the metro: tap or insert at the turnstile before the platform. On trams and buses: stamp in the yellow/orange validator machine immediately on boarding — not when you feel like it, immediately. The fine for an unvalidated ticket is 266 PLN (around £50). Inspectors are active throughout the network including tourist areas.

Time-limited tickets (90-minute, 24-hour) are validated once and then used freely for their duration. Single tickets are validated per journey.

Jakdojade: The Essential App

Jakdojade is a Warsaw (and broader Poland) public transport journey planner. Enter your start point and destination and it returns the fastest route, which bus or tram number to take, where to board, when the next vehicle arrives, and where to transfer. It integrates metro, trams, and buses in one result.

Download it before you arrive. It works offline once you've downloaded the Warsaw data. It's more reliable than Google Maps for Warsaw's bus and tram network and is used by Varsovians as standard.

The Warsaw City Card

For stays of 3+ days with planned heavy sightseeing, the Warsaw City Card includes unlimited public transport and discounts or free entry at major attractions. Available for 24h, 48h, and 72h. Worth calculating against individual transport and entry costs before buying.

Our Take

90-minute ticket for most individual journeys, 24-hour for busy days. Download Jakdojade before arrival. Validate immediately on boarding. The network will take you everywhere you need to go.
