Is 5 Days in Naples Enough? Honest Answer

Five days in Naples is ideal. The city alone justifies three days, and the surrounding region (Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Amalfi Coast, Capri) is exceptional. Five days lets you do both without rushing either.

What 5 Days Really Allows

Naples has a reputation that puts some visitors off. The traffic, the noise, the chaotic street life: these are real, but they're also what makes Naples unlike anywhere else in Italy. The city centre (particularly the Spaccanapoli and the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is extraordinary: Baroque churches every 100 metres, the San Gregorio Armeno Christmas workshops, the Cappella Sansevero with the Veiled Christ sculpture (one of the most technically astonishing works in the world), and pizza that genuinely tastes different here than anywhere else.

The National Archaeological Museum (MANN) deserves a full morning alone: the finest collection of Roman artefacts in existence, largely from Pompeii and Herculaneum. The Secret Cabinet with its Roman erotic art requires a separate ticket and is worth it.

Five days means two to three proper days in the city, with the chaos becoming familiar and charming rather than overwhelming. You find your favourite sfogliatella bakery, you learn which streets to walk at which times, and Naples starts to make sense in a way that a two-day visit never allows.

When 5 Days Might Feel Slightly Short

The Amalfi Coast, Capri, and the Phlegraean Fields (Campi Flegrei, the volcanic landscape west of Naples) are all substantial trips that five days makes possible but tight. If you want all three plus Pompeii and the city, you're looking at a genuinely packed schedule. Six days would be more comfortable.

Day Trip Potential

Pompeii is 30 minutes from Naples by Circumvesuviana train and is the most impressive archaeological site in Western Europe. Budget a full morning or longer: the site is large and the detail is extraordinary when you know what you're looking at. Herculaneum, closer and smaller, is better preserved and often less crowded. The Amalfi Coast by ferry from Molo Beverello is the most scenic approach: Positano in the morning, lunch in Amalfi, return by ferry or bus in the afternoon. Capri by hydrofoil takes 50 minutes and a full day gives you the Blue Grotto (book early), the Villa Jovis, and the view from Monte Solaro.
