Is 4 Days in Naples Enough? Honest Answer

Four days in Naples is excellent. The city itself is a full sensory experience for two days, and the surrounding Campania region, with Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the Amalfi Coast, makes the other two days extraordinary. Naples is one of those destinations where the city and the day trips are equally compelling, and four days is enough to give both sides proper attention.

What 4 Days Unlocks

Naples rewards time in a way that many Italian cities don't. The centro storico, the historic centre, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and feels like a city that hasn't changed its essential character in centuries. The narrow streets of the Spaccanapoli, the underground city beneath it (Napoli Sotterranea), and the Cappella Sansevero with its impossibly detailed veiled marble Christ are all genuinely remarkable.

The National Archaeological Museum is one of the most important museums in the world for ancient Roman artefacts, and the collections from Pompeii and Herculaneum that couldn't be left on-site are here: mosaics, bronzes, frescoes, and the Secret Cabinet of erotic art. It needs two to three hours and repays every minute.

And the pizza. Naples is the home of pizza and four days gives you enough meals to form an actual opinion about which pizzeria is your favourite.

Pompeii is 30 minutes by Circumvesuviana train and one of the great historical sites anywhere on earth. A full morning and early afternoon is the right amount of time. Four days makes this an obvious and unhurried choice.

The Amalfi Coast is two hours by boat or bus from Naples and one of the most dramatic coastlines in Europe. Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi itself: four days from Naples makes a full day here achievable.

What You'll Still Miss

Herculaneum, the smaller and better-preserved Roman town next to Pompeii, is only 20 minutes from Naples but often skipped in favour of Pompeii alone. It's smaller but the preservation of organic materials (wooden furniture, food) makes it extraordinary in different ways.

Capri is an hour by hydrofoil and entirely beautiful but expensive and crowded. Four days from Naples makes it theoretically possible but it competes with the Amalfi Coast for your coastal day.

How to Structure 4 Days Well

Day 1: Naples city. Spaccanapoli, the Archaeological Museum, and the Cappella Sansevero. Pizza for lunch and dinner. No excuses.

Day 2: Pompeii. Full day. Take the early Circumvesuviana train. Visit Mount Vesuvius if you have the energy after Pompeii (or on a separate half-day).

Day 3: Amalfi Coast. Ferry or SITA bus from Naples. Positano for the morning, Amalfi for lunch, Ravello for the afternoon.

Day 4: slow morning in Naples. The underground city (Napoli Sotterranea) if you haven't been. Castel dell'Ovo on the waterfront. A final pizza.
