Galway in June: What to Expect

June is the right month to visit Galway. The city is warm by Atlantic Ireland standards, the festivals are building, and the combination of cobbled streets, trad music, and easy access to Connemara and the Aran Islands is as good as it gets. Galway rewards you for going slightly off the beaten path.

Weather

Expect temperatures of 15-19°C in June, which is genuinely pleasant for the west of Ireland. Rain is always possible, this being the Atlantic coast, but June has more sunshine hours than autumn or winter months. The evenings stay light until well past 10pm. Pack layers and a good waterproof: you'll want them for any day trips to the coast or the islands.

Crowds and Prices

Galway is popular but not yet overwhelmed in June. The Galway Arts Festival is in July, which is when the city really fills up. June gives you a good feel for the city's character without the July surge. Accommodation is available and reasonably priced. The Latin Quarter pubs and restaurants are busy in the evenings but not impossible.

What's On

The Galway Film Fleadh is typically held in June and is one of Ireland's most respected film festivals, with Irish and international premieres, Q&As, and screenings across the city. It's a genuine draw for film lovers and gives Galway a creative energy in early summer. Music sessions in the pubs run year-round, but in June the fine evenings mean the outdoor spaces come into their own too.

One Thing to Watch

Day trips from Galway, particularly to the Aran Islands and into Connemara, book up fast in June. Ferries to Inis Mor sell out on good-weather days. Book ferry tickets in advance if island-hopping is on your itinerary. Also note that driving in Connemara on narrow bog roads is slow going: plan more time than Google Maps suggests.
