Galway in July: What to Expect

July is genuinely one of the best months to be in Galway. The city has always been good at summer, but July stacks the calendar with festivals, fills the pubs with music, and turns Shop Street and the Latin Quarter into one long outdoor social. Book accommodation early because this city knows exactly what it's worth in July.

Weather

Temperatures average 16°C to 20°C with occasional warmer days. By any southern European standard that's mild; by Connemara standards, it's a heatwave. Rain is still a real possibility; the Atlantic does what it likes. July tends toward more dry days than not, but pack a waterproof anyway. Evenings are long with light until well past 10pm, which is the real prize, making outdoor drinking, walking, and festival-going feel easy.

Crowds and Prices

Galway is busy in July. The city centre streets, particularly Quay Street and Shop Street, fill quickly on weekends. Accommodation prices are at a seasonal peak, particularly during festival weeks. Book at least six to eight weeks ahead for anything central. That said, Galway's compact size means crowded streets still feel lively rather than oppressive, and the city handles visitors well without losing its own rhythm entirely.

What's On

The Galway Film Fleadh runs in early July and is one of Ireland's best film festivals, drawing international premieres and strong industry attendance. The Galway International Arts Festival follows in mid-to-late July and is the main event: theatre, visual arts, street performances, and large-scale outdoor spectacles across the city. Buskers are everywhere through the month. Traditional music sessions in the pubs off Dominick Street run every night and need no ticket, just a seat claimed early.

One Thing to Watch

The Arts Festival fortnight in mid-to-late July is transformative for the city but also the tightest point for availability. If you arrive without booked accommodation during festival week, you're either paying seriously over the odds or staying well outside the city. The transport links from surrounding towns to Galway are limited. Plan ahead or arrive before the festival and stay through it.
