September is one of the best months to visit New York. The brutal July and August heat and humidity clear by mid-September, the city's residents return from summer travels, and the energy of New York in full autumn mode is genuinely hard to match. Prices also start dropping from summer peaks.
Weather
Early September still pushes 27 to 30°C with lingering humidity. By late September it settles at 18 to 23°C, which is excellent for the amount of walking New York demands. The parks, particularly Central Park, start their very early autumn colour shift late in the month. Pack light clothes for early September and add layers as the month progresses. Rain is possible throughout but rarely more than a shower.
Crowds and Prices
Labor Day (first Monday of September) is the marker: after it, the summer tourist crowd drops noticeably and the city shifts to fall mode. The major museums, the Brooklyn Bridge, the High Line, and the Empire State Building observation deck all become more manageable. Hotel prices on both sides of Labor Day differ significantly: book for the week after and you'll pay less for the same room. The subway is busy year-round in New York, but the frantic pace of tourist summer eases.
What's On
The US Open tennis at Flushing Meadows runs through early September and is one of the world's great sporting events to attend in person. Tickets for outer courts are affordable; the main Arthur Ashe Stadium is more expensive but the atmosphere is exceptional. New York Fashion Week runs in early September, adding its own energy to the Meatpacking District and surrounding areas. The San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy is a late September tradition with street food, games, and processions along Mulberry Street.
One Thing to Watch
September 11th falls in the month, and the memorial and museum at the World Trade Center site are particularly poignant around that date. The annual Tribute in Light, two beams of light from the site visible across the city and from New Jersey, is worth seeing if you're there. Expect longer queues at the museum around that specific date. Book tickets in advance if the 11th falls during your trip.
