April in New York is one of the best arguments for spring travel. The cherry blossoms in Central Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden peak in early to mid-April, the crowds are below summer levels, and the city runs at a pace that feels genuinely exciting rather than overwhelming. The weather is unreliable but forgivable.
Weather
April in New York ranges from 9C at night to 17C during the day. Cold snaps can extend the winter feel into early April. Warm spells arrive from mid-month. Rain is frequent. The classic New York spring wardrobe is layers: a light coat that works at 10C and can be carried comfortably at 17C. Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable at any time in New York.
Crowds and Prices
April is not summer, which in New York means hotel prices are lower and attractions are more manageable. The Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, and the top of the Empire State Building are always busy, but April queues are shorter than July and August. Spring Break (typically mid-March into early April) brings families into the city and causes a temporary crowd and price spike. Outside of that, April is excellent.
What's On
The Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Sakura Matsuri (cherry blossom festival) in late April is one of the best free or low-cost April events in the city. Central Park's cherry blossoms around the Mall and Reservoir are accessible any day in peak bloom. The New York City Half Marathon is in March, but the full marathon calendar begins building in spring. Citi Field baseball at the Mets and Yankee Stadium are both in full season from late March.
One Thing to Watch
Brooklyn Botanic Garden during peak cherry blossom (usually the last week of April into early May) gets extremely busy on weekends. Timed entry tickets are required and sell out in advance. Check the blossom forecast closer to your visit and aim for a weekday if possible. The blossoms last roughly two weeks and the peak window is only a few days.
