New York in November is the city in one of its best modes: the summer tourists are gone, the cultural season is fully underway, and the streets have an energy that comes from a city operating at its own pace rather than performing for visitors. The weather is crisp. The Thanksgiving parade is extraordinary. And yes, prices spike over the holiday weekend.

Weather

Temperatures range from 5°C to 12°C in early November, dropping to 2°C to 8°C by month's end. Clear, crisp days are common in early November, with increasing chance of wind and cold as the month progresses. Central Park in autumn leaf is genuinely beautiful into early November. Pack warm layers and a windproof jacket; wind chill in Midtown between the buildings can be sharp.

Crowds and Prices

Early November is good value by New York standards. Hotel rates in Midtown and Brooklyn are lower than the summer peak and the Christmas season. The Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, and the Whitney are all more comfortable than in July and August.

Thanksgiving week transforms the city. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on the fourth Thursday of November draws enormous crowds along its route through Midtown Manhattan, and hotel rates spike across the city for the surrounding days. The Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving are among the busiest air travel days of the year in the US. If your trip overlaps with the holiday weekend, book everything well in advance.

What's On

The New York City Marathon takes place on the first Sunday of November, finishing in Central Park. It closes large sections of the city's roads and creates a genuinely electric atmosphere across the five boroughs. An incredible event to spectate from the course.

Thanksgiving Day brings the Macy's Parade, NFL on television, and the city in an unusually festive, communal mood. The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is lit in late November, marking the start of the city's most photographed season.

One Thing to Watch

Thanksgiving weekend is both the best and most expensive time to be in New York in November. Hotel prices double or triple for the parade weekend. The Monday flight home is one of the most congested travel days of the US year. If you want the parade experience, book months ahead. If you want good value, travel the week before Thanksgiving.
