New York in March is cold, occasionally brilliant, and significantly cheaper than the summer months. The city does not stop for weather, the subway runs, the restaurants are full, and Central Park, even in grey March weather, has a specific atmosphere that warm months do not replicate. St Patrick's Day on the 17th turns Fifth Avenue into one of the world's great street parties. For a city break that punches hard on culture and value, March delivers.
Weather
March in New York ranges from 1°C to 3°C at night to 8°C to 10°C during the day. Cold, windy, and occasionally snowy, particularly early in the month. Late March can bring milder days reaching 14°C to 15°C, and the cherry blossoms begin in Central Park by the very end of the month in a good year. Pack a proper winter coat, warm layers, and walk-ready shoes. Wind chill on the avenues and the waterfront is a real factor.
Crowds and Prices
March is shoulder season for New York by the city's own standards. The Statue of Liberty, the Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, and the 9/11 Memorial are all accessible without the school holiday queues. Hotels in Midtown, Chelsea, and the Lower East Side are priced below summer and December rates. Spring break can push prices up in late March if school holidays align, so check your specific dates. Outside of St Patrick's Day weekend, early and mid-March are particularly good value.
What's On
St Patrick's Day Parade on Fifth Avenue is one of the world's largest and most traditional, a genuine New York institution rather than a tourist performance. The city's Irish pubs fill from early morning on the 17th. March also brings the beginning of Major League Baseball spring training activity, with the New York season starting in late March or early April. The New York International Auto Show sometimes falls in late March at the Javits Center.
One Thing to Watch
St Patrick's Day in New York is not just a pub crawl: it is the parade and then a city-wide celebration. Fifth Avenue is closed to traffic, and mid-Manhattan becomes very difficult to navigate around the route. If you are not part of the celebrations, plan your day away from the parade corridor on the 17th. If you are celebrating, book your chosen pub spot early and arrive well before noon.
