June is a strong month for New York. The parks are green, the outdoor food markets are running, and the city has an energy that winter doesn't quite match. NYC Pride in late June is one of the world's great city events. The heat and humidity are building but haven't yet hit the July and August peak. June is New York before it becomes summer-hard work.

Weather

Temperatures reach 24-28°C through June, with humidity that makes it feel warmer by late month. Rain is possible at any time. Central Park, the High Line, and the Brooklyn waterfront are all excellent in good weather. Pack layers for museums and subway stations, which are aggressively air-conditioned, and dress for the heat outside. Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable.

Crowds and Prices

New York is busy year-round, but June sits in a sweet spot between the slower winter/spring period and the peak summer holiday season. The major museums are busy. Book timed entry for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and the Statue of Liberty ferry in advance. Accommodation prices are high, as they always are in New York, but June isn't the ceiling.

What's On

NYC Pride is the headline. Running through the last week of June with the main parade on the last Sunday of the month, it's one of the largest Pride events in the world and takes over much of Midtown and the West Village. The Hudson River Park comes alive with outdoor events, outdoor Shakespeare runs in the Delacorte Theater in Central Park (free, queues form early), and the rooftop bars and restaurants are in full swing.

One Thing to Watch

The subway is extensive but confusing for first-timers. Download the MTA map offline and understand that express trains skip local stops, which catches visitors out more than anything else. June heat in the subway stations (particularly older, non-air-conditioned platforms) is intense. Carry water, allow extra time, and use the OMNY contactless tap-to-pay system rather than fiddling with MetroCards.
