May is one of the best months to visit New York. The brutal winter is well behind the city, Central Park is in full bloom, outdoor dining is back, and it's not yet the sticky heat of a New York summer. Locals are in a good mood and the city has a specific energy in late spring that's hard to match at other times of year.
Weather
Temperatures range from 14°C to 22°C in May, with mostly pleasant, sunny weather. Rain is possible throughout the month. The evenings can still be cool, so a light jacket is worth having for after dark. By late May, genuinely warm days become more common. Central Park's cherry blossoms peak in early May, adding one of the city's most visually striking free experiences.
Crowds and Prices
New York is expensive and busy year-round, but May sits just below the summer peak. Hotels are cheaper than June and July, and popular spots like the Empire State Building observation deck, the High Line, and the major museums are very busy but not at capacity. Book any ticketed attractions in advance. The Met and MoMA get long queues later in the day but are manageable in the morning.
What's On
Memorial Day weekend at the end of May is a significant American holiday. The city fills up, hotel prices rise sharply, and the unofficial start of summer brings outdoor events and parades. The Veterans Day Parade and various neighbourhood events add to the city's energy. If you want to experience the long weekend, book early and budget more.
The Five Boroughs Bike Tour takes place in May, closing streets across all five boroughs for one of the world's largest cycling events.
One Thing to Watch
The subway is your best friend in New York and your biggest source of frustration if you don't understand it. Service changes, particularly on weekends, are frequent. The MTA posts planned work well in advance, but not all visitors check before setting off. Download the MTA app, check your route the night before, and build extra time into any journey on a Saturday or Sunday. The subway is still the fastest option for most of the city, but weekend engineering work can reroute or eliminate services without warning.
