May is a strong month to visit Milan. The city is warm, the fashion and design season brings extra energy, and the parks and outdoor spaces that Milan doesn't get enough credit for come into their own. It's also one of Italy's most liveable cities when the temperature is pleasant rather than relentlessly hot.
Weather
Temperatures range from 14°C to 24°C in May, with warm sunny days and occasional rain or thunderstorms, particularly in the second half of the month. Northern Italy can get short, intense downpours. A compact umbrella or light rain jacket is worth carrying. Daytime sightseeing is comfortable in light layers.
Crowds and Prices
Milan attracts business travellers and fashion tourists year-round, which keeps hotel prices relatively high and demand constant. May is below the summer peak for leisure tourists, but be aware that major fashion and design events dramatically affect availability and prices. Check whether your dates coincide with any major trade fairs or events before booking.
What's On
Milan Design Week (Salone del Mobile) takes place in April, sometimes overlapping into early May, and is the most significant design event in the world. If your visit touches it, expect the city to be extremely busy, hotels to be expensive, and design installations throughout the Brera and Tortona districts. It's spectacular if you're interested in design; expensive and crowded if you're not.
1 May is a public holiday in Italy. Some local businesses close but tourist sites operate normally.
Salone del Mobile aside, May brings outdoor markets and events to the Navigli canal district, which is one of Milan's most enjoyable areas in warm weather.
One Thing to Watch
The Last Supper, Leonardo da Vinci's mural at Santa Maria delle Grazie, requires advance booking months ahead. This is not an exaggeration: popular date slots sell out very early. If visiting the Last Supper is on your list, which it should be, check availability and book the moment you know your travel dates. Turning up without a booking means you don't get in.
Our Milan travel guide covers the Duomo, the Navigli, and everything in between, including exactly how to handle the Last Supper booking.
