Milan in autumn is a more interesting city than many visitors expect. September brings Milan Fashion Week and a city at its most self-consciously stylish. October is cooler and the city's real life -- the aperitivo hour, the Brera neighbourhood art scene, the incredible cathedral interior -- becomes more accessible without high-season crowds. November turns cold and foggy, a characteristic Lombard autumn that fills the city's bars and excellent indoor spaces. Packing for Milan requires acknowledging that this is a city where how you look is noticed.

The Autumn Layering Problem

September in Milan averages 22-26 degrees with warm evenings and occasional humidity. October drops to 14-18 degrees, noticeably crisp, with some rain. November sits at 5-10 degrees, frequently foggy, with regular rain and cold evenings.

The Po Valley position means autumn fog is a genuine Milan feature from mid-October. The fog dampens everything: the air, the pavements, the atmosphere around the Navigli canals. By November, fog and cold are the baseline conditions for outdoor time.

Milan-Specific Essentials

A quality coat or jacket. Milan is fashion-conscious. A well-cut wool coat or a good-quality insulated jacket reads appropriately here in a way that a functional-but-ugly waterproof does not. This does not mean expensive -- it means presentable. By October this is your most-worn item.

Warm mid-layers that look good. A merino wool jumper, a fine-knit rollneck, or a quality cardigan works as a mid-layer and holds up as a standalone item for indoor use. Milan's bar and restaurant culture is stylish. The background noise of the aperitivo hour includes well-dressed locals.

Waterproof layer for October and November. A packable rain jacket (kept in your bag rather than worn over everything) or a compact umbrella handles the October and November rain without replacing your presentable outer layer.

Comfortable, stylish walking shoes. Milan's city centre is walkable and the pavements are manageable, but the Navigli canal area and the Brera streets involve stone and cobblestone. Leather boots or clean trainers with grip handle both the terrain and the aesthetic expectation.

Smart casual options for aperitivo and dinner. Milan takes the aperitivo hour seriously. A clean shirt, smart trousers, and a good layer make you appropriate for everything from a Campari at the Camparino to dinner in the Brera.

What to Leave Behind

Sandals. October is already too cold and too damp for sandals in Milan.

Casual, visibly functional outdoor gear. A technical fleece or a hiking-style waterproof is not the right choice for the aperitivo hour. Pack something you'd actually wear in a stylish Italian city.

Summer fabrics without layers. October in Milan requires real warmth. Pack accordingly.

Milan Autumn Works Across the Experience Range

The Duomo interior in October mist, the Last Supper visit (book weeks ahead), the Navigli canal bars on a cool evening -- all of these reward being dressed well and being warm enough to enjoy them. Pack for the cold and the style requirement together and Milan autumn works.
