Milan in August is a city that has largely gone on holiday. Milanese residents, among the hardest-working in Italy, take their annual leave seriously, and much of the city's fashion and design industry shuts down for the Ferragosto period. The result is a city that feels unusual: less frenetic, more manageable, but with a quieter eating and nightlife scene than any other month.

For visitors focused on the major cultural sites, this is actually a reasonable time to visit.

Weather

August in Milan averages 30 to 33 degrees Celsius with significant humidity from the Po Valley. It's one of the hottest cities in Northern Italy in summer. The Navigli canal district provides some relief with shade and water, and the bars along the canals are popular with the visitors who remain.

Air conditioning is standard in hotels, museums, and the Duomo. Outdoor sightseeing is best in the morning.

Crowds and Prices

The Duomo, the Last Supper (Santa Maria delle Grazie), and the Pinacoteca di Brera all stay open in August and draw visitors. The Last Supper requires advance booking regardless of month; in August the booking windows are slightly more available than in spring and autumn.

Hotel prices in August are lower than the fashion week peaks in February and September. Business hotels in the city centre offer good value in August because the business travellers have left.

What's On

August is quiet for Milan's signature events. Fashion weeks run in February and September. The La Scala opera season runs from December through June. What August has is access: major museums without the queues, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele without the November crush, and the city at a pace that lets you actually look at it.

One Thing to Watch

Ferragosto on 15 August means widespread closures. Most local restaurants, neighbourhood cafes, and non-tourist shops close from around 10 to 20 August. The tourist-facing restaurants around the Duomo and the Brera district stay open, but independent neighbourhood dining becomes difficult. If you're visiting over Ferragosto, make restaurant reservations in advance and verify they're open on the specific dates.
