Milan in October occupies an interesting position in the calendar. Milan Fashion Week runs in late September, so by early October the fashion industry circus has largely moved on, and the city returns to what it actually is: Italy's business and design capital, with world-class museums, excellent food, and an attitude that's more northern Italian than tourist-brochure Italian. October is a solid month to see it.

Weather

Expect 14-18°C in early October, cooling to 10-13°C by late October. Northern Italy's autumn arrives earlier than the Mediterranean south, and Milan can be grey and misty in October. The city has excellent indoor culture, the Pinacoteca di Brera, the Castello Sforzesco, and the Duomo interior, all of which make rain days entirely productive. The fashion and design shops are year-round but autumn collections give October visitors the best window for new season.

Crowds and Prices

Quieter than the fashion week peak and the summer tourist season. Milan doesn't attract the same volume of pure tourists as Rome or Venice, but the combination of business travellers and design industry visitors keeps it consistently active. Hotel prices in October are more reasonable than September's fashion week peak. The Last Supper (Leonardo's Cenacolo) requires booking well in advance regardless of month.

What's On

Milan Design Week is in April, not October, but the design scene's year-round programming keeps the city's galleries and showrooms active. The Treiennale design museum has strong autumn exhibitions. La Scala opera house's season typically opens in December (with a major premiere on 7 December, Sant'Ambrogio Day), but October sees rehearsals, and concert programming at the Filarmonica della Scala and other venues runs through autumn.

One Thing to Watch

The Last Supper books out months in advance regardless of when you visit. If seeing it is important to your Milan trip, this is the one booking to make before anything else. October is no different from any other month on this point: if you arrive without a ticket, you will not get in. Book the moment your trip is confirmed and then plan everything else around it.
