April is a reasonable month to visit Milan. The weather is improving, the city's design culture is interesting year-round, and if you time it right you can catch the Salone del Mobile design fair, which is one of the most significant events in the global design and furniture calendar. That same fair also makes parts of the city significantly more expensive for that specific week.
Weather
April in Milan brings daytime temperatures of 14C to 18C, with cool evenings around 8C. Po Valley weather can be variable: some fog carries over from winter and spring thunderstorms are possible. April is pleasant for walking the Navigli canals and the central shopping district. A light jacket and layers are sufficient for most of the month.
Crowds and Prices
Milan is primarily a business and fashion city rather than a leisure tourism hub. April visitor numbers are moderate. The Salone del Mobile (Furniture Fair) takes place in late April and draws 300,000 trade and public visitors over several days. During Salone week, hotel prices in Milan spike dramatically: it is one of the most expensive trade fair periods in any European city. If you are not attending Salone, avoid that specific week or book months in advance.
What's On
Fuorisalone, the off-site design events during Salone del Mobile week, transforms the Brera and Tortona districts into design showcase areas. Even if you are not in the industry, the installations and events are interesting. Easter sees the city's churches in full use. The Last Supper (Leonardo's fresco at Santa Maria delle Grazie) requires advance booking regardless of month, and April is no exception.
One Thing to Watch
The Last Supper requires a timed ticket booked weeks or months in advance. Do not leave it until you arrive. Slots sell out far ahead of peak times. This is the single most important practical piece of advice for Milan, and April is no different. Book it as the first thing you do after booking your flight.
Our Milan guide covers the Last Supper logistics, the Navigli neighbourhood, and how to approach the city beyond the fashion showcase.
