September brings two different Milans depending on when you arrive. Milan Fashion Week dominates a week in mid-to-late September, filling the city's hotels and inflating prices sharply. Before and after that window, September is a solid month with good weather and the city's cultural season fully open.

Weather

September in Milan runs between 16 and 24°C. The summer heat has mostly dropped, making the city's walking-heavy itinerary much more manageable than July or August. Occasional rain is possible. The city's architecture, particularly the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, looks better in September's softer light than the flat summer glare. Pack light layers with a jacket for evenings.

Crowds and Prices

Milan is a business and fashion city more than a traditional tourist destination, which means its crowd patterns are different from Rome or Florence. August is actually quieter, as Milanese residents leave for the coast or mountains. September brings them back along with the autumn fashion and business crowd. Hotel prices are reasonable in early September, spike during Fashion Week (usually around September 17th to 23rd), and settle again afterwards. If you're not specifically going for Fashion Week, book around it.

What's On

Milan Fashion Week is the defining September event. If you're in the industry, it's the reason to go. If you're not, it's a reason to check dates carefully. Outside Fashion Week, September sees new art exhibitions opening across the Brera district galleries, the Pinacoteca di Brera, and the Triennale Design Museum. La Scala's opera season typically opens in December, but September has concerts and events at the theatre and surrounding venues.

One Thing to Watch

Last Supper tickets. Leonardo's painting at Santa Maria delle Grazie is the most in-demand museum experience in Milan and one of the most restricted in Europe. Visits are in groups of thirty, last fifteen minutes, and tickets sell out months in advance. Book before you book your flights. If you haven't booked and arrive without a ticket, the cancellation lottery at the door is inconsistent. Don't leave it to chance.
