Las Vegas in autumn is the season the city deserves. The brutal summer heat -- which can hit 40 degrees in July -- finally breaks in September, and by October the Strip is genuinely pleasant to walk in daylight. November brings cooler temperatures that catch visitors off guard, particularly in the evenings when the desert air drops quickly. The casinos and shows are the same year-round; the difference in autumn is that the outdoor experience from pool deck to pedestrian bridge to outdoor show is actually comfortable.

The Autumn Layering Problem

September in Las Vegas averages 32-36 degrees during the day -- still very hot, though meaningfully down from summer peaks. Evenings cool to 22-25 degrees. October is the sweet spot: 24-28 degrees in the day, cooler evenings around 16-19 degrees. November surprises many visitors: 16-20 degrees in the day, and evenings that drop to 8-12 degrees.

The desert swing between day and night temperatures is the core packing challenge. A midday walk in October is warm enough for summer clothes. Standing outside a show at midnight in November requires an actual layer. The gap can be 15 degrees in a single day.

Las Vegas-Specific Essentials

A proper layer for evening outdoor time. A light wool jumper or a leather jacket handles October evenings comfortably. For November, something warmer -- a down jacket or a proper wool layer -- is needed for outdoor time after 8pm.

Comfortable walking shoes for the Strip. The Strip is long. The casino floors are enormous. Vegas involves more walking than it looks like on a map, and all of it is on hard flooring or hot pavement. Cushioned, comfortable shoes protect you over multiple long days.

Sun protection for September and October. The Nevada desert UV is intense even in October. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for outdoor daytime time.

Smart casual to formal options for evenings. Vegas has a wide dress code range -- from pool parties to fine dining. The shows, the upscale restaurants, and the clubs have different requirements. Pack at least one smarter option that works for evening dining.

Light layers for casino interiors. Casinos run cold air conditioning at all times. A thin cardigan or a light layer in your bag prevents the familiar experience of getting cold at the slots at 2am.

Comfortable sandals or casual shoes for pool and daytime outdoor time. September pool use is still viable. Comfortable casual shoes for daytime Strip walking.

What to Leave Behind

Heavy winter coat. Even November evenings in Vegas do not require a full winter coat. A down jacket or a warm wool layer is sufficient.

Only summer clothes. September daywear is summer. October evenings and November all-day require real layers. Don't arrive without them.

Uncomfortable dress shoes for long nights. Vegas involves long periods on your feet across casino floors, show venues, and club queues. Fashion over function leads to a miserable third day.

Autumn Vegas Is the Best Version

The value is clear: the shows, the food, the casinos are identical to the summer experience, but you can walk between them without feeling like you're in an oven. October in particular is Las Vegas at its most accessible. Pack for the day-night temperature swing and the city works in your favour.
