Krakow in summer is one of Central Europe's most rewarding city breaks. June through August brings temperatures in the 22 to 28 degree range, the Main Market Square (Rynek Glowny) fills with outdoor cafe tables, and the city's medieval architecture looks at its best in long summer light. It also sits in a continental climate zone where afternoon thunderstorms are a reliable part of the summer pattern. Pack for warm, active days and prepare for sudden weather changes.

The Heat/Weather Strategy

Krakow's summer is genuinely warm without reaching the extremes of Mediterranean cities. Comfortable mornings, warm afternoons that can push to 30 degrees on the hottest days, and occasional dramatic thunderstorms in the late afternoon or evening. The storms are part of the Central European summer rhythm and usually pass within an hour.

The city is compact enough to walk almost everywhere, which makes comfortable footwear the central decision in your packing.

City-Specific Must-Haves

A packable waterproof jacket is the non-negotiable addition. Krakow's thunderstorms are proper storms: heavy rain and strong wind. A jacket that folds into its own pocket goes in your day bag every day.

Comfortable walking shoes are essential. The cobblestones of the Old Town and Kazimierz (the Jewish Quarter) are beautiful but uneven. Wawel Castle's paths add a hillside element. Your shoes will work hard. Choose cushioned trainers or walking shoes over anything flat and unsupported.

A light layer for evenings. After a storm the temperature drops and evenings cool noticeably. A thin jumper or light fleece in your bag handles this.

Sunscreen for the sunny days. Krakow's UV index in July is in the moderate-to-high range. A hat helps during the Wawel Castle visit, which involves extended outdoor time on an exposed hill.

Smart casual for evenings. Krakow has an excellent restaurant scene, particularly in Kazimierz, and the outdoor dining culture in summer rewards an evening of genuine effort. Nothing formal required.

If you are visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau as a day trip from Krakow, which most visitors do, dress respectfully. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as the site involves significant walking on gravel and uneven ground. A light jacket handles the weather regardless of the forecast.

What to Leave Behind

Heavy formal clothing adds no value in Krakow. The city is smart casual at its dressiest. Leave the heavy suitcase at home: Krakow's cobblestones are not wheeled-luggage-friendly.

Do not underestimate the thunderstorm risk and leave the rain layer behind. This is a mistake a lot of summer visitors make in Central Europe.
