Krakow in April: What to Expect

April is a good, honest month to visit Krakow. The stag and hen party crowds that defined the city's reputation a decade ago have eased, the Old Town looks excellent in spring light, and prices remain significantly lower than comparable Western European destinations. Easter is a major event here, with genuine cultural depth.

Weather

April in Krakow ranges from 5C at night to 14C during the day. Early April can still feel like winter, with occasional cold winds from the east. From mid-month onward it improves meaningfully. A warm mid-layer and waterproof jacket cover you across the full range. The Planty (the ring of parks around the Old Town) is green and pleasant by late April.

Crowds and Prices

Krakow is affordable and remains so in April. Hotel and restaurant prices are low by Western European standards. The Old Town, Wawel Castle, and the Kazimierz (Jewish quarter) see moderate crowds in April. Easter brings Polish domestic visitors and some international tourists. Wawel Castle requires timed tickets for the State Rooms; book ahead, especially over Easter.

What's On

Easter (Wielkanoc) is deeply important in Polish Catholic culture. Krakow hosts Palm Sunday processions, Good Friday observances in churches across the city, and Easter markets in the main square (Rynek Glowny). The Emaus fair takes place on Easter Monday in Zwierzyniec and is a traditional Krakow event. The Lajkonik parade is in June, but the city's folk calendar is active in spring.

One Thing to Watch

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, about 70km from Krakow, is one of the most visited and emotionally important sites in Poland. April is busy for visits, particularly over the Easter period. Entry to the grounds is free but guided tours require advance booking. Do not leave it until you arrive.
