Krakow in November: What to Expect

Krakow in November is cold and grey, and for a city this beautiful and this cheap, that's a reasonable trade-off. The Old Town and the Rynek Glowny (main square) lose none of their grandeur in winter light, and by late November the Christmas market opens and Krakow becomes one of the most atmospheric cities in Central Europe.

Weather

Temperatures range from 0°C to 6°C through November, with frequent cloud cover, some rain, and the real possibility of the first snow by month's end. Wind chill makes it feel colder. Proper winter clothing is not optional: thermal layers, a heavy outer coat, a hat, and gloves. Krakow does genuinely cold November weather, but the historic architecture and the cobbled streets of the Old Town absorb it well.

Crowds and Prices

Low season in every sense. Flights from the UK on Ryanair and Wizz Air are often available for under 40 euros return. Hotels in the Old Town and the Kazimierz Jewish Quarter are excellent value. Wawel Castle and the Rynek Glowny are practically empty by European heritage site standards. Auschwitz-Birkenau, an important and sobering day trip, is more manageable with smaller groups in winter.

What's On

The Krakow Christmas market opens in late November on the Rynek Glowny and is consistently rated among Poland's best. The backdrop of the Cloth Hall and the twin towers of St Mary's Basilica is extraordinary. Mulled wine, oscypek (smoked sheep's cheese), and traditional crafts fill the market square.

Krakow's Jewish culture quarter Kazimierz runs cultural events through the autumn, and the many cellar bars and jazz clubs of the Old Town provide excellent indoor alternatives to any cold evening.

One Thing to Watch

Auschwitz-Birkenau is a 90-minute drive from Krakow and one of the most visited historical sites in Poland. Book timed entry well in advance, even in November, as official guided tours fill up. The site is sobering and important at any time of year; the winter setting makes it even more affecting.
