Krakow in December is one of the best-value city breaks in Europe. The Christmas market on the Main Market Square is world-class, the city's medieval architecture gets better with frost and winter light, and accommodation costs a fraction of what you'd pay in Prague or Vienna for an equivalent experience. The trade-off: December in Krakow is cold in a serious way, and the final days before Christmas get very busy. Plan around the weather and book ahead for Christmas week.
Weather
Cold, often very cold, and potentially snowy. December temperatures in Krakow average -1°C to 4°C, and snow is likely at some point during the month. The Main Market Square under snow, with the St Mary's Basilica and the Christmas market lights, is one of Europe's best winter city scenes. Dress for proper Eastern European winter: thermal layers, a heavy coat, warm hat, and waterproof boots. The cold here is real. Do not arrive underprepared for it.
Crowds and Prices
Excellent value through most of December. Flights from the UK are cheap, hotels are affordable, and the city is significantly more relaxed than peak summer. The Main Market Square Christmas market runs from late November and is busy but not overwhelming in early December. That changes sharply from around 20 December: the market reaches peak crowd in the week before Christmas, with the square genuinely packed in the evenings. If you're coming for the market, a midweek visit in the first two weeks of December is the smartest timing.
What's On
The Christmas market on Rynek Glowny is the main draw. It runs around the entire perimeter of Europe's largest medieval market square, with food stalls, craft vendors, a nativity scene, and a large Christmas tree. Oscypek (smoked sheep's cheese) grilled over open coals, mulled wine, and zapiekanka (Polish open-faced toasted baguette) are the market food staples. Wawel Castle is lit in the evenings and makes for excellent photography in winter light. Auschwitz-Birkenau, 70km from Krakow, is open year-round and December is one of the quieter months for visits, though it requires appropriate mental preparation regardless of when you go.
One Thing to Watch
The Christmas market in the final days before 24 December is extremely crowded, with the square at full capacity in the evenings. If your visit falls in this window, arrive at the market early in the morning or accept that peak evening hours will be a proper crowd experience. The stalls and atmosphere are still worth it, but set expectations accordingly.
