Krakow in October is excellent value and a genuinely rewarding city break. The stag weekend crowds that define Krakow's unfortunate summer reputation thin out considerably, the Old Town reverts to a city that Poles are actually proud of, and the autumn colour on Planty Park and around Wawel Castle is quietly beautiful. We rate October as one of the best months to visit.

Weather

Getting cool but manageable. Expect 10-14°C in early October, dropping to 7-10°C by late October. Rain becomes more frequent through the month. The Old Town's medieval architecture looks genuinely atmospheric in overcast autumn conditions. Pack layers and a waterproof. The city's indoor cafe and restaurant culture is strong, and Krakow's milk bars (bar mleczny) are excellent, cheap, and warm.

Crowds and Prices

Noticeably quieter than the summer peak. Krakow has become one of Europe's most popular city break destinations and summer weekends can feel overwhelmingly full of group tours and budget airline arrivals. October shifts the balance back. Hotels are very affordable by Western European standards even in summer, so October prices become genuinely remarkable value. The Main Market Square (Rynek Glowny) has space to breathe.

What's On

The Jewish Culture Festival wraps up in June, but Krakow's Jewish Quarter (Kazimierz) has a year-round restaurant and bar scene that comes into its own in October when it's not overrun. The Conrad Festival of literature runs in October or November, reflecting Krakow's UNESCO City of Literature status. Auschwitz-Birkenau, a 90-minute drive away, is visited year-round but October visits outside school holiday periods are more reflective and less crowded.

One Thing to Watch

Krakow is one of Europe's most polluted cities for air quality in autumn and winter, when coal-burning heating systems fire up. October is the beginning of this season. The smog can be genuinely unpleasant on still, cold days. It's not a reason to avoid visiting, but it's worth knowing about if you have respiratory conditions. Mornings are typically worse. Get up early and walk; the light and the air are both better.
