Krakow in January is cold and quiet, but in a way that works in the city's favour. Snow on the Main Market Square, steam rising above the mulled wine stalls, the Wawel Castle against a grey winter sky: it's atmospheric in a way that summer, for all its bustle, isn't. It's also very affordable.
Weather
January temperatures in Krakow range from -5°C to 2°C. Snow is likely and can be heavy. The city is walkable, but frozen pavements mean solid boots with grip are important. Pack full winter kit: a proper coat, hat, gloves, and thermal layers. Cold days with clear skies and snow cover are genuinely beautiful here.
Crowds and Prices
January is low season. The Main Market Square is peaceful, Wawel Castle is accessible without queues, and accommodation is among the cheapest of any major European city in winter. Flights from the UK are inexpensive. Krakow is already excellent value, and January amplifies that.
What's On
The Christmas and New Year period extends into early January with occasional outdoor events and stalls on the Main Square. The Szopka Krakow competition, a tradition of elaborate nativity scenes, typically has displays visible in early January. The Philharmonic and theatre season runs fully through winter.
One Thing to Watch
A visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, about an hour from Krakow, is important context for visiting the region. In January, the site is open but conditions can be cold and bleak. That's appropriate given what the site represents, but dress accordingly and allow enough time.
Our Krakow guide covers the city's key sites, how to get to and from the city, and how to plan your days.
