Krakow in May is close to ideal. The weather is warm, the Old Town is looking its best, and the city is busy without being overwhelmed. It's also consistently one of Western Europe's best value city breaks, and May sits before the summer surge that pushes prices up.## Weather

Temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C in May, with warm sunny days becoming more reliable as the month progresses. Rain is possible but not dominant. Light layers and a packable jacket cover most scenarios. The Main Market Square and Wawel Castle both look exceptional in clear late-spring light.

Crowds and Prices

Krakow attracts a significant volume of UK, Irish, and European visitors, particularly for stag and hen weekends, but May is still below peak season. The Old Town is lively in the evenings but the main sights are accessible during the day without excessive queuing. Accommodation is very affordable by European standards, and eating and drinking even more so. It remains one of the most rewarding value destinations in Europe.

What's On

1 May is a public holiday in Poland (State Holiday). Many shops close and the city has a slightly festive atmosphere. 3 May is Constitution Day, another public holiday. This means early May often produces a long weekend, which brings Polish domestic visitors to Krakow alongside international tourists. Expect hotels to be fuller and book accordingly.

Krakow Film Festival takes place in late May and is one of the oldest documentary film festivals in the world. It brings events and screenings across the city and is worth factoring in if the dates align.

One Thing to Watch

Auschwitz-Birkenau, around 60km from Krakow, is one of the most important historical sites in Europe and a sobering but essential visit for many travellers. Entry to the main site is free but guided tours, which are strongly recommended, need to be booked well in advance, especially for May when demand is high. Don't leave it to the day.

Our Krakow travel guide covers the city and how to approach the Auschwitz day trip with the preparation and respect it deserves.
