Yes, Paris is safe for tourists. It's one of the world's most visited cities and the overwhelming majority of visitors enjoy it without incident. However, Paris has one of the highest rates of pickpocketing of any European capital, and certain spots are specifically notorious. Going in informed is genuinely useful.

The Real Risks

The Eiffel Tower is the single highest-risk location for pickpockets in Paris. The queues, the crowds, and the distracted tourists create near-perfect conditions for working in teams. Keep bags zipped and close your entire time in the area.

The RER B from Charles de Gaulle airport to the city is well-known for pickpocketing, particularly on the stretch through the northern suburbs. If you arrive at CDG, keep luggage and bags actively managed on this train.

Other high-risk areas: the Sacre-Coeur steps and Montmartre tourist streets, the area around Notre-Dame, and busy metro lines including Line 1 (the tourist line). The "friendship bracelet" approach near Sacre-Coeur is persistent and leads to demands for money; keep walking.

Gare du Nord has a rough edge and attracts opportunistic theft from arriving travellers. Keep bags close when managing luggage here.

Solo Travel and Specific Groups

Solo female travelers can navigate Paris comfortably in the main tourist areas. Street harassment is more common in Paris than in northern European capitals, particularly in parts of the northern arrondissements and on public transport at night. The Marais, Saint-Germain, and the main tourist districts are broadly fine.

Paris has a visible and historic LGBTQ+ scene centred on the Marais neighbourhood. France has strong legal protections and the city is broadly welcoming, though experiences vary by area.

Practical Safety Tips

  • Keep bags zipped and held in front of you at the Eiffel Tower, Sacre-Coeur, and on Line 1 of the metro.
  • Manage luggage actively on the RER B from CDG airport.
  • Ignore friendship bracelet approaches near Sacre-Coeur.
  • Don't put your phone on restaurant tables; keep it out of sight.
  • Stay alert at Gare du Nord when arriving or departing.
