Paris in February is a genuine low-season option for most of the month, with one very significant exception. Valentine's Day is, in the global imagination, a Paris event, and the city's hotels respond accordingly: prices around February 14th spike sharply, particularly in the central arrondissements. Get your dates either side of Valentine's weekend and you will find a Paris that is quieter, colder, and noticeably cheaper than the spring rush. The Louvre, the Musee d'Orsay, and Montmartre are all manageable in February.

Weather

February averages 3C to 9C. Rain and grey skies are common but not relentless. The city can be damp and cold for days at a time, then break into sharp winter sunshine. Pack a warm coat, waterproof layer, and comfortable walking shoes. Snow is rare but possible. The outdoor terraces are mostly closed; the cafes and bistros compensate.

Crowds and Prices

Low season outside Valentine's weekend. The Louvre and the Musee d'Orsay have better ticket availability and shorter queues than any spring or summer month. The Eiffel Tower remains busy but is manageable. Hotel prices in February (excluding the Valentine's spike) are among the year's lowest in Paris. The Six Nations brings Paris match days into February, with French home games at the Stade de France driving up accommodation near Saint-Denis and adding atmosphere to the city's sports bars.

What's On

Valentine's Day is Paris's February headline, even if the city's own celebrations are more restaurant-focussed than publicly visible. The Six Nations rugby is a significant February event: if France plays at home, the brasseries around the Stade de France area and many Paris sports bars fill up considerably. The Paris fashion week typically falls in late February or early March.

One Thing to Watch

Valentine's weekend hotel pricing in Paris is not a marginal increase: central hotels can see rates two to three times the surrounding February price. If Valentine's is the purpose of your trip, book early. If it is not, shift your dates by a few days either side and the price difference is significant.
