Paris in July earns its reputation. Bastille Day on the 14th is the city at its most ceremonially spectacular, Paris Plages transforms the Seine banks into urban beaches, and the summer light on Haussmann's boulevards and the Eiffel Tower is as good as any city in the world in July. It's expensive, it's busy, and many Parisians leave. Come anyway.
Weather
Temperatures average 24°C to 28°C, with hot spells frequently pushing to 32°C or 33°C. Paris is susceptible to heat waves in recent years and the city's architecture, beautiful but not designed for climate extremes, can make indoor spaces very warm. The Seine provides some relief along its banks. Mornings are the most comfortable window for museum queues and outdoor walks. Evenings cool to around 17°C to 19°C and are the finest time in the city.
Crowds and Prices
July is peak tourist season in Paris. The Louvre, the Musee d'Orsay, Versailles, and the Eiffel Tower all require advance booking and still feel busy. The Marais, Saint-Germain, and the area around Notre-Dame are congested on weekday afternoons. Hotel prices in the 1st, 4th, and 6th arrondissements are at their annual peak. The 11th, 20th, and the Canal Saint-Martin area offer better value, local character, and excellent eating without a tourist-zone premium.
What's On
Bastille Day on July 14th is the centrepiece: the military parade down the Champs-Elysees in the morning and fireworks over the Eiffel Tower in the evening. Crowds are enormous for the fireworks; position yourself by early afternoon. Paris Plages opens in mid-July along the Seine and Bassin de la Villette, with sand, deck chairs, outdoor cinemas, and sports facilities. Tour de France typically arrives in Paris in the third week of July, bringing a free and spectacular finale to the Champs-Elysees.
One Thing to Watch
The queue for the Eiffel Tower without a pre-booked ticket in July is a significant commitment: two to three hours is realistic for the summit, one to two hours for lower levels. Buy timed-entry tickets online as far ahead as possible; same-day booking is rarely available in July. Even with tickets, allow more time than the booking slot suggests for security and general crowd management.
