May is one of the best months to visit Paris, and that's not a controversial position. The horse chestnuts are blooming along the boulevards, the terraces are full, the light over the Seine is exceptional, and it's not yet the tourist gridlock of July and August. The city is at its most Parisian in late spring, and that's the version worth visiting.
Weather
Temperatures range from 12°C to 20°C in May. Mostly pleasant, with a mix of sunny days and rain. A light waterproof jacket and a cardigan or light layer cover most eventualities. The parks, the Tuileries, the Luxembourg Gardens, the Bois de Boulogne, are all at their best in May and full of people using them as they're intended to be used.
Crowds and Prices
Paris is the world's most visited city and it's never quiet. May is significantly better than July and August, but still busy. The Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and Versailles all see long queues. Book timed entry tickets for the Louvre and Versailles weeks ahead. The Eiffel Tower summit tickets sell out fast. Hotel prices are below the summer peak but Paris is never cheap accommodation.
What's On
1 May is Labour Day in France, one of the most significant public holidays in the country. Many businesses close, including some restaurants and shops, but tourist attractions mostly stay open. Lily of the valley (muguet) is traditionally given as gifts on 1 May, and you'll see vendors selling it across the city. It's a distinctly Parisian tradition.
8 May is Victory in Europe Day, another public holiday in France. Some businesses close again.
Ascension and Pentecost also fall in May on some years, adding further long weekends and increasing domestic travel within France.
One Thing to Watch
May in Paris has three potential public holidays within a month, which means three periods of partial business closures. Plan around them: check opening times for restaurants and shops on public holiday dates and have backup options. The holidays also increase domestic travel, making trains and TGVs to and from Paris busier. Book transport early if you're arriving or departing around 1 May or 8 May.
