Paris in September is the month the city genuinely likes itself again. August sees many Parisians leave, closing local bistros and creating a slightly hollowed-out version of the city. September brings them back, the cultural institutions open their autumn programmes, and Paris operates with full energy. It's one of the best months to visit.
Weather
Early September in Paris sits around 20 to 24°C. By late September it cools to around 16 to 20°C, which is comfortable for the city's walking-heavy itinerary. The Luxembourg Gardens and the Tuileries look excellent in early autumn light. Rain is possible but usually passes quickly. Pack layers: a light jacket for evenings is useful from mid-month.
Crowds and Prices
Paris is never empty, but September brings a noticeable shift from August's tourist-only city. The Louvre's queues, the Eiffel Tower crowds, and the Musee d'Orsay all remain substantial. Paris doesn't have an off-season in the traditional sense. What changes in September is the character of the city around the major sights: local life reappears, the neighbourhood restaurants fill with Parisians again, and the city feels more like itself. Hotel prices drop from August rates, though Paris stays expensive.
What's On
Journees du Patrimoine, the European Heritage Days, falls on a weekend in mid-to-late September and opens buildings and institutions normally closed to the public: the Elysee Palace, ministerial buildings, private hotes particuliers, and historic sites across the city. Queues form early at the most popular sites. It's worth building your September trip around this weekend if you can. Paris Fashion Week also runs in late September, overlapping with the city's art season openings.
One Thing to Watch
The Eiffel Tower booking system requires advance planning in any month. Timed entry tickets sell out weeks ahead, and turning up without a booking means using the stairs (which still require tickets) or joining the standby queue. Book Eiffel Tower access and the Louvre separately as early as possible, ideally when you book accommodation. September gives you more availability than August but not unlimited options.
