Five days in Miami is enough for a genuinely satisfying visit, provided you don't spend all of them on South Beach. Miami is more varied than its reputation suggests, and five days gives you room to discover that.

What 5 Days Really Allows

South Beach and the Art Deco Historic District are the obvious starting point and they deserve at least a day and a half: the Ocean Drive architecture, the early morning beach before the crowds, the design district around Collins Avenue. But Miami has other worlds.

Wynwood is one of the most impressive street art districts in North America. The Wynwood Walls are the centrepiece, but the surrounding blocks have murals, galleries, and an arts scene that continues to develop. A morning in Wynwood followed by lunch at the market is a good mid-trip change of pace. Little Havana along Calle Ocho is a neighbourhood with genuine culture: the domino players at Maximo Gomez Park, the cigar rollers, the Cuban food at restaurants that have been there for decades.

The Design District and Brickell are Miami's wealthier faces: excellent restaurants, the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) on the bay, and the Frost Museum of Science on Museum Park. Five days means you can visit PAMM and still have time left.

Miami's beach and water options extend well beyond South Beach. Key Biscayne has a state park with quieter beaches and mangrove trails. Miami Beach itself (the barrier island, not just South Beach) has beach access at various points along its length.

When 5 Days Falls Short

The Florida Keys are the obvious extension from Miami: Key West is three and a half hours by car and worth at least two days on its own. Five days in Miami doesn't really leave room for that trip unless you're prepared to sacrifice city time.

The Everglades are 45 minutes southwest and one of the most unique ecosystems in North America. An airboat tour is the easiest way to access them, and it fits into a half-day from Miami.

Day Trip Potential

The Everglades are the strongest day trip from Miami. Fort Lauderdale is 45 minutes north: the beach is quieter than Miami and the New River area has good restaurants. The Florida Keys start at Key Largo about an hour south: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is one of the best snorkelling and diving sites on the US East Coast.

The Bottom Line

Five days in Miami is enough for South Beach, Wynwood, Little Havana, and at least one day trip. Don't try to see every neighbourhood and every beach: choose two or three areas to go deep in and let the rest wait for next time.
