Perfect, by most definitions. December temperatures in Miami sit around 22°C to 27°C, with low humidity, blue skies on most days, and ocean water that's still comfortable for swimming. Evenings are warm enough for outdoor dining without a jacket. Rain is much rarer than in the summer months. This is genuinely the ideal version of Miami's weather, and the beach, the Art Deco district, and the outdoor spaces all benefit from it.

Crowds and Prices

Peak season. Flights and hotels are significantly more expensive than in summer, which is counterintuitive but correct: Miami's peak is winter rather than summer, because summer is too hot and humid for most visitors. South Beach fills up, hotel rates on the Collins Avenue strip are at their highest, and restaurants in Wynwood and Brickell are busy. Early December, the first two weeks, is the better value window. The Art Basel period (first week of December) brings the art world in large numbers and pushes prices in the Design District and Wynwood to their absolute peak. Even if you're not attending the fair itself, Wynwood and the Design District in Art Basel week have a particular energy that's worth being in the city for. Through the rest of December, Miami's outdoor event calendar, the food and wine events, the beach concerts, and the hotel pool parties run at full strength. New Year's Eve on South Beach is one of the US's biggest outdoor NYE celebrations.

One Thing to Watch

Art Basel week in early December is not a quiet time to visit Miami. Hotels in South Beach and the Design District are at maximum prices and rooms sell out months ahead. If Art Basel is the reason for the trip, plan well in advance. If you want a quieter and more affordable Miami, the middle weeks of December between the art fair and Christmas are the relative sweet spot.
