May is a transitional month in Miami. The peak winter tourist season has ended, prices are lower, and the city has a slightly more local feel. The trade-off is heat, humidity, and the beginning of the wet season. If you're going in knowing what to expect, it's a perfectly good time to visit. If you're hoping for the breezy beach weather of January, manage those expectations.
Weather
Temperatures in May range from 24°C to 31°C with high humidity. Rain increases through the month as the wet season begins, typically in the form of heavy afternoon thunderstorms that pass relatively quickly. Mornings are usually sunny. Pack light, breathable clothing, sunscreen with high SPF, and expect to be genuinely hot outdoors in the middle of the day. Hurricane season officially starts 1 June, so May is generally safe from storms.
Crowds and Prices
Miami's peak tourist season runs from December through April, which means May is a shoulder month with noticeably lower hotel prices and fewer visitors. South Beach and Wynwood are busy but not at capacity. Restaurants are easier to get into without advance booking. It's a genuinely good value window compared to winter and spring break periods.
What's On
1 May doesn't carry the same public holiday significance in the US as in Europe, and Miami operates normally. Memorial Day weekend at the end of May is a different story: it's traditionally one of Miami's biggest party weekends, drawing large crowds to South Beach. Hotels fill up and prices spike for the long weekend.
Ultra Music Festival takes place in late March, so May misses that event. The Art Basel season runs in December. May is lighter on headline events, which is part of its appeal for visitors who want the city without the festival crowds.
One Thing to Watch
The afternoon thunderstorm pattern means beach mornings and indoor afternoons make the most sense. Build your schedule around that rhythm: beach or outdoor activities early, lunch and indoor options like the Perez Art Museum Miami or the Wynwood Walls in the afternoon, and evenings for dining and the Art Deco nightlife of South Beach. Fighting the heat in the middle of the afternoon is pointless when the city has excellent air-conditioned alternatives.
Miami is most rewarding when you work with its climate rather than against it.
