Two days in Naples is enough for the city and one day trip, but not both. Naples or Pompeii: most visitors want both, and two days means choosing which one gets the full day.

What You Can Cover in 2 Days

Two days in Naples:

  • The historic centre and the Spaccanapoli. The straight street that cuts through the old city, with the churches, the markets, the street altars, and the noise. Naples's centro storico is UNESCO-listed and genuinely unlike anywhere else in Italy.
  • The National Archaeological Museum. The greatest collection of Roman antiquities in the world, with the Pompeii finds and the Farnese collection. This alone justifies the visit. Allow three hours.
  • Pizza. Two days in Naples gives you four to six meals. At least three of them should be pizza. L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele or Sorbillo are the names that come up. Both are worth the queue.
  • Pompeii as a day trip on day two. Forty minutes by Circumvesuviana train. The ancient city takes a full morning to afternoon. Book skip-the-queue entry in advance.

What You'll Miss

Two days in Naples:

  • The Amalfi Coast. Positano and Ravello are spectacular but require a full day, a ferry or bus, and a decision to give up Naples or Pompeii time.
  • Capri. The island is a forty-minute ferry from Naples. It's beautiful and very crowded. It also takes a full day and competes directly with Pompeii for day-trip priority.
  • The underground Naples. The Napoli Sotterranea tour through the Greek-Roman aqueducts and tunnels below the city is one of the most unusual city tours in Europe. It usually gets cut.

How to Make the Most of It

  • Book the Archaeological Museum timed entry in advance. It can get busy and the online ticket removes queue time at the door.
  • Book Pompeii entry in advance. The archaeological site sells timed entry tickets online. Going without one in peak season means a queue at the gate.
  • Stay in the historic centre. Noisy, chaotic, and full of life. It's the point of Naples, not a problem to manage.
  • Eat lunch, not dinner, as your nice meal. Naples restaurants at lunch are quieter and often do better value menus. The pizza culture doesn't distinguish between meals anyway.

The Honest Verdict

Two days in Naples covers the city's chaotic, extraordinary historic centre, the world's best Roman archaeological museum, and Pompeii. That's a packed and worthwhile trip. The Amalfi Coast and Capri require additional days.
