April in Galway is exactly what you expect from the west of Ireland: atmospheric, occasionally spectacular, and reliably wet. The city is small enough to explore fully in a day or two, the music scene in the pubs on Quay Street runs whatever the weather, and the Connemara landscape beyond the city is at its green best. Bring waterproofs and an open mind.

Weather

April in Galway averages 7C at night and 12C during the day. Rain arrives frequently, driven by Atlantic weather. It is rarely cold enough for heavy winter clothing, but a waterproof jacket is essential rather than optional. The Aran Islands and Connemara are dramatic in April: moody skies, green fields, stone walls. If that sounds like your idea of beautiful, you are right.

Crowds and Prices

Galway has a year-round student population and a strong domestic Irish tourist trade, but international visitor numbers are lower in April than summer. Accommodation is good value except over the Easter long weekend. The city centre (Shop Street, Quay Street, and the Latin Quarter) is lively on weekend evenings throughout the year.

What's On

The Galway Film Fleadh takes place in July, and the Galway Arts Festival in July. April is quieter on the festival front, but the traditional music sessions in Tigh Neachtain, The Crane Bar, and Monroe's Tavern run regularly and are among the best in the country. The start of April sees St. Brigid's traditions carry over from early spring, and Easter brings church services and some local events.

Easter weekend in Galway is popular with domestic Irish visitors, and accommodation in the city centre books up. The Aran Islands ferry and Connemara day trips also fill up over Easter.
