Vienna in May is one of Europe's most refined city break experiences. The Ringstrasse looks its best in late spring, the Prater is green and pleasant, outdoor concerts begin in the parks, and the city's extraordinary cultural infrastructure, opera, museums, coffee houses, is running at full capacity. It's a city that rewards visitors who treat it seriously, and May is close to the perfect time to do that.
Weather
Temperatures range from 12°C to 21°C in May. Warm, largely sunny weather with occasional rain or thunderstorms. The parks and outdoor terraces are in full use by mid-May. A light jacket is useful for evenings and the inevitable cooler days, but daytime sightseeing is genuinely comfortable.
Crowds and Prices
Vienna is a major European capital and May brings a significant number of visitors, but it's below the summer peak. The main museums, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Belvedere, and Schonbrunn Palace, are busy but manageable with advance tickets. Schonbrunn in particular sees long queues without pre-booking. Hotel prices are rising by May but still below July and August levels. The city has more accommodation options at various price points than visitors often expect.
What's On
1 May is a public holiday in Austria. Some local businesses close but Vienna's major attractions stay open.
Vienna Wiesenmarkt and various spring markets operate in May, and the Vienna City Marathon typically takes place in April, so the immediate post-marathon recovery period may still be visible in early May.
Life Ball, one of Europe's largest charity events supporting HIV research, has historically taken place in May at the Vienna City Hall. Check whether it's running in your visit year.
The Vienna Philharmonic and the Staatsoper both run full programmes through May. Booking opera tickets in advance is strongly recommended.
One Thing to Watch
Vienna's coffee house culture is one of the city's genuine cultural offerings, not just a tourist tick. The great coffee houses, Cafe Central, Cafe Hawelka, Cafe Landtmann, are busy but genuinely worth the time. The trap is treating them as quick stops. They're designed for sitting, reading, and lingering over coffee and a Melange. Arriving in a rush and leaving in five minutes misses the point. Budget at least an hour and order the Apfelstrudel.
Our Vienna travel guide covers Schonbrunn, the Ringstrasse, and the coffee houses so you arrive ready to do the city properly.
