Vienna in April is a very good city break. The grand imperial city looks excellent in spring, the coffee house culture is year-round, and the concert season is in full swing. It is one of Europe's most cultured capitals and April sits in the window when the weather is good enough to enjoy it properly but before summer tourist volumes push prices and queues to their peaks.

Weather

April in Vienna ranges from 7C at night to 16C during the day. Spring arrives gradually and there are warm spells from mid-month. Rain is possible but the city is not notably wet in April. A light jacket and comfortable walking shoes cover most conditions. The Prater park and the Ringstrasse boulevards are pleasant in April sun.

Crowds and Prices

Vienna is popular year-round but April is shoulder season moving toward peak. The major museums (Kunsthistorisches, Belvedere, Schonbrunn Palace) are busy but accessible with advance booking. Schonbrunn Palace requires timed entry tickets, particularly for the Grand Tour of the imperial apartments. Hotel prices are mid-range in April, lower than summer.

What's On

The Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna State Opera continue their seasons through April: concerts and opera performances are available, though the best tickets sell out months ahead. The Vienna Spring Marathon typically runs in April. The Prater amusement park, home to the famous Riesenrad (giant Ferris wheel), opens for its spring season in April. Easter markets at Schonbrunn and Freyung are charming and worth a visit.

One Thing to Watch

The Vienna State Opera and Philharmonic: standing room tickets (Stehplatz) are sold on the day of the performance at the box office, starting one hour before curtain. This is a legitimate and affordable way to attend world-class opera or orchestral music in Vienna. Budget-conscious visitors with flexibility should consider this option. Queues start forming early for popular performances.

Our Vienna guide covers the imperial palaces, the coffee houses, the music venues, and how to navigate one of Europe's great capital cities.
