Vienna in December is one of the strongest arguments for a European Christmas market city break, and it comes with one of the strongest warnings: book accommodation many months in advance. The city runs over 20 Christmas markets simultaneously, the Schönbrunn Palace market and the Rathausplatz market are genuinely world-class, and the combination of Imperial architecture, mulled wine, and classical music concerts gives December Vienna a quality that's hard to match anywhere. Just don't show up expecting to find a hotel room a week out.
Weather
Cold, occasionally snowy, and often crisp. Vienna in December averages 0°C to 4°C, with frost common and snow likely in the later weeks. The city looks extraordinary with the Baroque and Jugendstil buildings frosted or dusted in white. Dress for proper Central European winter: thermal layers, a warm coat, waterproof boots. The markets are mostly outdoors and you'll be spending real time in the cold, so the preparation matters.
Crowds and Prices
Vienna's Christmas reputation is well established, which means the city fills up in December. The Rathausplatz market, the Schönbrunn market, and the Spittelberg market are the most visited. Accommodation prices start rising from the first days of December and reach their annual peak in Christmas week. The city is large enough to absorb visitors without the claustrophobic feeling of smaller Christmas market destinations, but popular markets in the evening get genuinely busy. Book your accommodation several months ahead, particularly for the 18-26 December window.
What's On
The Rathausplatz market, in front of the City Hall, is the largest and most famous: it runs from mid-November through 26 December with hundreds of stalls, an ice rink, and evening entertainment. The Schönbrunn Palace market, in the palace forecourt, is smaller and more atmospheric. The Spittelberg market in the Biedermeier quarter is the most artisan-focused and least commercialised. The Vienna Philharmonic's December concert schedule and the State Opera's programme are both worth checking; attending a classical concert in December Vienna is the city experience at its highest point. The Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Belvedere are all at their most accessible in December with fewer visitor numbers.
One Thing to Watch
Accommodation for Christmas week in Vienna books out completely, sometimes months in advance. If your travel dates include 20-26 December, this is not the city to leave your accommodation planning until a month out. Book early or accept that you will pay extreme rates for whatever is left.
