Vienna in March is excellent by any measure. The Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Vienna State Opera, the Schonbrunn Palace, and the city's extraordinary cafe culture are all fully operational and much less crowded than summer. March is when Vienna belongs to people who actually want to be there for the culture rather than the Instagram grid, and the city rewards that disposition generously.
Weather
March in Vienna ranges from 2°C to 4°C at night to 10°C to 12°C during the day. Cold and overcast conditions are common in early March, with some rain and occasional cold spells. A warm jacket and layers are necessary. Late March can bring genuinely pleasant days reaching 15°C to 16°C, and the Prater park and the Naschmarkt start to feel spring-like. The Ringstrasse boulevards are excellent for walking in any weather that is not actively raining.
Crowds and Prices
March is solidly shoulder season for Vienna. Schonbrunn Palace, the Belvedere (home of Klimt's The Kiss), the Kunsthistorisches Museum, and the Spanish Riding School are all accessible without summer queues. Hotels across the 1st and 7th districts are priced below peak season. The Vienna Opera Ball is a February event, so that surge is past.## What's On
The Vienna State Opera and the Wiener Philharmoniker both have full March programming. March is one of the better months for getting tickets to a performance at the Opera at reasonable prices, as the most popular January and February dates have passed. The Vienna Concert House (Konzerthaus) also runs a full spring programme. Vienna's Naschmarkt, the city's main open-air food market, runs Tuesday through Saturday year-round and is excellent in March for food and people-watching.
One Thing to Watch
The Spanish Riding School performances are one of Vienna's most popular attractions and tickets need to be booked in advance year-round. In March, availability is better than summer but do not assume walk-up tickets. Book online through the official Spanish Riding School website before you travel. Morning training sessions (Morgenarbeit) are a cheaper and more intimate alternative to the full performance, available on selected weekdays.
