Vienna International Airport (VIE) is in Schwechat, about 18km southeast of the city center. You have four realistic options: the CAT, the S-Bahn, a bus, or a taxi. The choice depends on where you're staying, how much luggage you have, and whether 14 minutes of time-saving is worth paying triple.
The CAT: Fast but You're Paying for Convenience
The City Airport Train (CAT) is the premium option: 16 minutes non-stop to Wien Mitte station (Landstraße, U3/U4 lines), no stops, dedicated luggage space, and online check-in available for some airlines on the return journey. Ticket: €14.90 one-way, €24.90 return.
It's genuinely comfortable and fast. But Wien Mitte isn't central for everyone — if you're staying in the 7th or 9th district, you're adding another two U-Bahn legs anyway. Do the maths on whether the time saving over the S-Bahn actually gets you to your hotel faster.
The S7: Cheaper, Slower, More Stops
The S-Bahn S7 runs the same route but with stops, takes around 30 minutes to Wien Mitte, and costs €4.20 with a standard Vienna transit ticket. That's the same ticket you'll use for the rest of your stay, so if you're buying a Vienna City Card anyway, your airport transfer is already covered.
Trains run every 30 minutes. It's not glamorous, but it works. Get a seat, enjoy the edge of the city slowly revealing itself, and save €10.
The Express Bus: Useful If You're Near the Right Stop
Vienna Airport Lines buses run to three routes: Westbahnhof, Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz, and Donauzentrum. Journey time is 45–60 minutes (longer in rush hour), and tickets cost €9. Frequency varies by route — check the timetable before you rely on it.
The bus makes sense if your accommodation is walking distance from Westbahnhof or Schwedenplatz. Otherwise, you're still getting on the U-Bahn at the end.
Taxis and Rideshares
Fixed taxi rate from the airport to the city center: €36. Reliable, pre-agreed, no meter surprises. Bolt and Uber operate from Vienna Airport but the pickup zone requires a short walk. For two people splitting the cost, a taxi isn't wildly expensive compared to two CAT tickets.
Pro Tips
- Buy your S7 ticket at the vending machine before boarding — inspectors are common.
- Wien Mitte connects directly to U3 (orange, west-east) and U4 (green, north-south via Karlsplatz).
- If you're arriving late night and your hotel is central, a taxi or rideshare at €36 fixed is hard to argue with.
- Return journey: CAT allows online check-in (Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss, Brussels Airlines) — genuinely useful if you want to drop your luggage in the city before heading to the airport.
Our Take
Take the S7. €4.20, 30 minutes, exactly the same destination as the CAT. Use the €10 saving on coffee and cake. Save the CAT for the return trip if you have check-in bags and a flight to catch.
