Let's be clear upfront: the Sound of Music tour is exactly as cheesy as you're imagining. Tour groups sing along on the bus. Guides wear dirndls. At certain stops, the group collectively hums "The Hills Are Alive" while staring at alpine scenery.

It is also, genuinely, one of the best ways to spend a half-day in Salzburg.

What the Tour Actually Is

The Sound of Music (1965) was filmed extensively in and around Salzburg, and the film's enduring popularity — particularly in the UK and USA — means the city has leaned fully into its movie heritage. A dedicated tour has been running for decades and visits the key filming locations across a 3–4 hour route by bus.

The main stops include:

  • Mirabell Gardens — where the Do-Re-Mi sequence was filmed on the famous steps and around the Pegasus fountain
  • Leopoldskron Palace — the exterior used as the Von Trapp family home; privately owned, so you view it from a boat or the road, not from inside
  • Hellbrunn Palace gazebo — where the "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" sequence was shot; you can step inside the gazebo
  • Mondsee Church — the wedding church, 30 minutes east of Salzburg; genuinely beautiful, worth the drive regardless
  • Lake Wolfgangsee and the Salzkammergut — the alpine lake region used as backdrop throughout the film

The scenery, independent of any film association, is genuinely stunning. The lakes and mountains of the Salzkammergut are among the most beautiful in Central Europe.

Who Should Take It

Sound of Music fans: Obviously. If you watched the film growing up, this is a pilgrimage and you will enjoy every second.

First-time Salzburg visitors: Less obviously, this is also one of the most efficient ways to see the Salzkammergut lake district. The tour combines Salzburg city landmarks with the surrounding countryside in a single half-day, covering ground that would take a full day of independent transport to replicate.

Travellers with limited time: If you have one day in Salzburg, the combination of the Hohensalzburg Fortress in the morning and this tour in the afternoon is a highly effective programme.

Who Probably Shouldn't Take It

If you have no connection to the film and little patience for group tours, you'd be better served renting a car and driving the Salzkammergut independently — you'll cover similar ground at your own pace without the commentary.

Honest Assessment

The singing on the bus is real. It happens. If that sounds mortifying, be warned. If it sounds fun, it absolutely is — the collective enthusiasm of a busload of Sound of Music fans harmonising through the Austrian countryside has a certain absurd joy to it.

The stops themselves are worthwhile. Mondsee Church in particular is a beautiful baroque building that holds its own entirely outside the film context. The Salzkammergut scenery is the kind that makes you understand why von Trapp family chose not to drive anywhere when they could hike over mountains instead.

Leopoldskron Palace is the one slight disappointment — it is privately owned and you cannot enter the grounds. You see it from a boat on the lake or from a respectful distance on the road. For a building that functions as the iconic image of the film, the viewing restrictions feel stingy. Manage expectations accordingly.
