Salzburg in September is a clear improvement on July and August. The Salzburg Festival, one of Europe's most prestigious classical music events, runs through late July and August and fills the city with a specific and expensive crowd. By September it's over, prices drop, and the city returns to a more genuine version of itself.

Weather

September in Salzburg averages 12 to 20°C, with the Alpine setting adding a freshness to the air that distinguishes it from Germany and lowland Austria. The Untersberg mountain and the Salzkammergut lakes around the city are excellent in September conditions. Early autumn colour starts appearing in the surrounding hills by mid-month. Pack layers and a waterproof: Alpine weather can change quickly.

Crowds and Prices

The festival crowd departure is the dominant change in September. The Getreidegasse, Salzburg's most famous shopping street and birthplace of Mozart, goes from barely passable in August to actually walkable. The Hohensalzburg Fortress above the city is manageable, particularly on weekday mornings. Hotel prices drop significantly from the festival-season rates. The day trips to the Salzkammergut lakes, including Wolfgangsee and Hallstatt, are noticeably better in September as the summer coach trip crowd reduces.

What's On

The main post-festival September cultural event in Salzburg is the Salzburg Autumn, which includes music and theatre events as the city's regular cultural institutions reopen their seasonal programmes. The Dult autumn market, a traditional Austrian market around the Salzburg Cathedral area, typically runs in late September with produce, crafts, and food stalls. The harvest season in the surrounding Salzkammergut and Salzach valley brings regional food events.

One Thing to Watch

Hallstatt. The lakeside village is on the UNESCO list and, in summer, has been so overwhelmed by visitors that the local community has had to limit coach access. September eases this considerably, but it still warrants an early arrival. Go in the morning before noon, walk the lake path up to the Hallstatt Skywalk viewpoint, and leave by early afternoon before the day-tripper coaches arrive from Salzburg.
