Salzburg in May is quietly excellent. The compact city looks its best in late spring, the surrounding Alps still have snow on the peaks, and the crowds that fill the Getreidegasse and the Mirabellgarten in July and August haven't fully arrived. For a city that punches significantly above its weight for culture, music, and scenery, May is close to ideal.
Weather
Temperatures range from 10°C to 18°C in May. Warm, sunny days are common, particularly in the second half of the month. Alpine spring weather can bring rain and cooler spells, so a light waterproof is worth having. The combination of the river, the old town, and the snow-capped peaks behind the city makes for exceptional photography in clear May light.
Crowds and Prices
Salzburg is a small city that gets a disproportionate number of visitors due to the Mozart connection and The Sound of Music. May is busy but manageable. The main sites, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mirabellgarten, and the old town, see good visitor numbers but without the shoulder-to-shoulder pressure of summer. Accommodation is cheaper than in July and August, and the main festivals haven't started yet.
What's On
1 May is a public holiday in Austria. Some local businesses close but tourist infrastructure remains open.
Salzburg Whitsun Festival (Pfingstfestspiele) sometimes falls in May and is one of the smaller but prestigious classical music events in the city's calendar. The main Salzburg Festival runs in late July and August, which is the city's cultural high point and its most expensive and crowded period.
The Salzburg Spring Market operates through May at the Domplatz with local produce, flowers, and artisan goods.
One Thing to Watch
Day trips from Salzburg to the Salzkammergut lake district, Hallstatt in particular, have become extremely popular. Hallstatt is a strikingly beautiful village but one of Austria's most Instagram-congested destinations. May is before the worst of the summer crowds, but it's still busy. If Hallstatt is on your list, visit on a weekday and arrive early. The village itself takes about two hours to see properly and the journey each way is roughly an hour and a half. Plan accordingly.
