Salzburg in December is one of the most legitimately festive cities in Europe. The claim isn't marketing: the old town, a Baroque jewel on the Salzach with a fortress on the rock above, looks made for Christmas, and the markets across the different plazas are among Austria's best. The honest version: it gets busy, particularly in the final weeks before Christmas, and accommodation books out fast. But if you go into it with eyes open, it's exceptional.
Weather
Cold and frequently snowy. Salzburg in December averages -1°C to 4°C, with a much higher chance of snow than the lower-altitude Austrian cities. The Hohensalzburg Fortress above the rooftops with snow is one of the iconic European winter images, and it's real rather than staged. Dress for proper Alpine winter: thermal layers, a heavy coat, waterproof boots, and a hat. The markets and the old town streets are almost all walkable without needing to go indoors for long stretches.
Crowds and Prices
Significant in December, and ramping up through the month. Salzburg is a compact city, and the Christmas markets concentrate visitors into a relatively small historic centre. Early December weekdays are manageable. The Christkindlmarkt in Domplatz and the market at the Residenzplatz get genuinely busy from the third week of December. Accommodation fills up and prices rise; book several months ahead if you're visiting in the Christmas week window. Hotel supply in the old town is limited, so the lead time matters.
What's On
The Domplatz Christkindlmarkt, in the cathedral square, is the most photogenic of Salzburg's markets, with the Baroque cathedral facade as a backdrop. The Residenzplatz market is the largest. The Hohensalzburg Fortress market is smaller and worth the funicular ride for the views alone. Music is at the heart of Salzburg's December: Advent concerts run in the cathedral, the Stiftskirche, and the Mozarteum, and the city that produced Mozart takes its classical music calendar seriously in the festive season. Sound of Music connections are everywhere year-round, but the Trapp family story has a particular December resonance given the film.
One Thing to Watch
Accommodation in central Salzburg is limited and books out months ahead for Christmas week. If you're visiting in the final ten days of December, plan your accommodation first before anything else. Latecomers end up staying outside the old town and adding transport time to every visit.
