Salzburg in summer is a city that punches well above its size. The old town is UNESCO-listed, the Hohensalzburg Fortress sits dramatically above the city, and the surrounding Alpine scenery is extraordinary. July and August bring temperatures of 23 to 28 degrees Celsius, the Salzburg Festival fills August with cultural events, and the Alpine proximity means afternoon thunderstorms are a reliable feature of the summer weather. Pack for warm, active days with a proper eye on sudden storm conditions.

The Heat/Weather Strategy

Salzburg sits in an Alpine valley that warms up quickly in summer but also channels the dramatic storms that build over the surrounding mountains. The thunderstorms arrive fast, are often accompanied by impressive light over the fortress, and clear within an hour. June and July see the most frequent storm activity. August is typically the driest summer month.

Mornings tend to be the clearest window for outdoor activity. The Festung Hohensalzburg, the Mirabell Gardens, and the historic old town are best visited before noon when the light is clear and the storm risk is lowest.

City-Specific Must-Haves

Comfortable walking shoes with good grip handle the Salzburg terrain well. The climb to the Hohensalzburg Fortress (you can walk or take the funicular) involves uneven stone paths. The old town's Getreidegasse and the surrounding baroque streets are mostly paved but tight and hilly. Trainers or walking shoes with cushioning cover all of it.

A packable waterproof jacket is the essential daily carry item. Keep it in your bag every day, not at the hotel. Alpine storms do not give much warning.

A light layer for evenings, which cool after storms and along the riverbanks. The Salzach River creates a pleasant but cooler evening breeze.

Sunscreen for clear days, particularly on the exposed Monchsberg and the Festung hill.

Smart casual clothing for the Salzburg Festival events if you are attending, or just for the city's generally cultured atmosphere. Salzburg is not stuffy but it appreciates an effort. Clean and presentable is the right register.

Modest dress for the churches. Salzburg Cathedral and the other historic churches throughout the old town require covered shoulders.

What to Leave Behind

Heavy formal clothing is unnecessary unless you have festival tickets that require it. Salzburg smart casual is the right standard for most situations.

Very light summer-only clothing without any layers is a mistake given the Alpine thunderstorm risk.

Plan the Full Trip

Rain jacket and comfortable shoes sorted. The guide covers the Hohensalzburg visit without the long cable car queue, the Sound of Music filming locations (and which ones are worth your time), and the old town without the tourist-trap restaurants.
