Salzburg in November offers two very different experiences depending on timing. Early November is cold and quiet, with the Sound of Music tour groups and summer festival visitors long gone and the city in a genuinely calm, unhurried mode. Late November brings one of Europe's finest Christmas markets, the Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz, and Salzburg transforms into something that looks like Christmas was invented here specifically.

Weather

Temperatures range from 1°C to 7°C through November, with cloud cover, rain, and real possibility of early snowfall by month's end. The Alps to the south are dusted in snow by November and the backdrop to the old town is dramatic. Pack proper winter clothing: a warm coat, hat, gloves, and waterproof boots. The Salzach river valley can be cold and damp in November.

Crowds and Prices

Early to mid-November is deep low season. Hotels in the Altstadt and across the river in the Neustadt are excellent value. The Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Salzburg Museum, and Mozart's Birthplace are all quiet and comfortable to visit. Late November picks up as the Christmas market opens and day-trippers arrive from Munich, Vienna, and further afield.

What's On

The Salzburg Christmas markets open in late November, typically around the third week of the month. The Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz, with the cathedral as a backdrop, is one of the most photographed Christmas markets in the world for good reason. The Mirabell Palace gardens market and several smaller neighbourhood markets contribute to a city that does the festive season very well.

Mozart's Geburtshaus (birthplace) runs Mozart-themed programming year-round, and the Mozarteum concert hall has an active November schedule.

One Thing to Watch

Salzburg is a small city and the Christmas market area around Domplatz can become very crowded at weekends once the market opens in late November. Visiting on a weekday, or arriving early morning and evening rather than during the peak midday hours, makes a real difference to the experience.
