April is a smart month to visit Salzburg. The city is beautiful, compact, and famous, but the summer music festival crowds have not yet arrived, prices are reasonable, and the Alpine backdrop still carries snow on the peaks while the city itself runs in proper spring conditions. It is one of the few months when Salzburg is both excellent and accessible.

Weather

April in Salzburg ranges from 5C at night to 14C during the day. The Alps visible from the city are still snow-capped, creating spectacular backdrops. Spring showers are frequent but light. A waterproof layer and comfortable walking shoes are standard. The Mirabell Gardens and Hellbrunn Palace grounds are at their spring best from mid-April onward.

Crowds and Prices

Salzburg is most heavily visited in late July and August for the famous Salzburg Festival (opera, theatre, concerts). April is shoulder season: the city is busy, particularly on weekends, but Hohensalzburg Fortress, the old town, and the Mozart sites are all accessible without summer queues. Hotel prices are moderate. Easter weekend causes a temporary spike.

What's On

Easter is an important occasion in largely Catholic Austria. Good Friday and Easter Sunday see special services at the Salzburg Cathedral. The Salzburg Easter Festival (Osterfestspiele) is a classical music and opera festival that runs over Easter week: it is prestigious, expensive, and worth checking if music is part of your visit. The Hellbrunn Palace trick fountains, one of Salzburg's most enjoyable sites, reopen in April for the season.

One Thing to Watch

The Salzburg Easter Festival drives accommodation demand significantly during its run. If your visit overlaps with the festival and you are not attending it, book early and expect higher prices in the centre. The city is small enough that festival audiences affect general availability. Outside of the Easter Festival period, April in Salzburg is very manageable.
